Elrie Joubert

An interest in the act of collecting as a process and the tendency to turn the unexceptional into something precious is the basis of my conceptual work.

An appropriation of traditional collections, such as the cabinets of curiosity from the Renaissance period, highlight my contemporary stance on the theme by utilizing the varied approaches and views towards objects, such as scientific inquiry, obsessive collecting and cataloguing to manipulate object into artwork. By taking on multiple roles as artist, scientist, archaeologist and guardian, I try to highlight the complex nature of, and relationship to, unwanted, discarded or
lost that are generally overlooked.
